Update (5 p.m.): Two suspects were arraigned in connection to the shooting. Read more here.

Update (3:30 p.m.): The teenager shot early Friday morning is listed as stable, alert and responsive, according to a message from Superintendent David Gamberg.

“[The family] expressed their gratitude for our support and respect for their privacy,” he wrote. “Our faculty and counselors have been available and working with students throughout the day. They will remain available in the upcoming days. Please contact them with any questions or concerns about your child’s reaction to this situation. The Southold Town Police have informed us that the incident was not school related, did not occur on school grounds and in no way jeopardizes school safety.”

Original Post: A Greenport High School student was the victim of a shooting early Friday morning and four suspects are currently in custody, according Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley.

The student, who is 18, was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of injuries that are not expected to be life threatening, the chief said.

Greenport Superintendent David Gamberg issued a statement to the school community Friday morning confirming that the student is under medical care.

“We have been reassured by the police that this incident does not jeopardize our building safety,” Mr. Gamberg wrote.

The district conducted emergency crisis meetings with staff before school began this morning, he said. Counseling support is being made available to “any and all students and staff in the district.”

“We will keep all students, families, and staff informed of any other relevant facts as they become available,” he said.

Chief Flatley said the shooting was not random and suspects were apprehended immediately afterward.

“We have a lot to sift through from the incident,” he said.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation. The shooting occurred in the Lakeside Garden Apartments.

Police received a 911 call just past 1 a.m. from a caller who heard a gunshot and saw several men running toward a black sedan, according to dispatcher’s audio archived through Broadcastify.

Police had the suspects within custody less than 10 minutes later. The victim suffered the gunshot wound in the stomach.

The suspects are expected to be arraigned this afternoon.

Mastic man held on $100K bail for shooting Greenport teen

A Mastic man was arraigned on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and assault for his role in a shooting early Friday morning that injured a Greenport teenager.

Josue Bedell pleaded not guilty to the two felony charges and unlawful possession of marijuana Friday afternoon at the arraignment in Southold Town Justice Court before Judge Eileen Powers.

Mr. Bedell was one of two people arraigned in connection to the shooting. Jalyn Terell Preston of Center Moriches was charged with fourth-degree criminal facilitation, a misdemeanor. He also pleaded not guilty.

Assistant district attorney Brad McGill said the defendants had traveled from Mastic to Greenport for a marijuana deal “which did not go well.” During the interaction the weapon was discharged and the victim was shot in the abdomen.

An order of protection was issued for Mr. Bedell to stay away from the victim, identified as Tyrus Smiley, 18, of Greenport.

Mr. Smiley is in stable condition at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Mr. McGill said.

The suspects fled westbound in a vehicle after taking the marijuana from the victim, Mr. McGill said. Police recovered marijuana and the weapon. Police detained four suspects, police Chief Martin Flatley said earlier Friday. It’s unclear whether two other suspects would also face charges. Only Mr. Bedell and Mr. Preston were arraigned.

Bail for Mr. Bedell was set at $100,000 cash or $300,000 bond. Bail was set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond for Mr. Preston. A Legal Aid attorney representing him said the family could only post $2,000 and the judge accepted that while warning him to appear at all future court dates, starting Jan. 4.

Peter Smith of Northport, the attorney representing Mr. Bedell, attempted to get the charges against his client dismissed because police had questioned him before an attorney was present. The judge denied that motion.

About 10 members of Mr. Bedell’s family and friends were in court.

If convicted of the top charges, Mr. Bedell could face up to 15 years in prison.

“These are extremely serious allegations,” Judge Powers said.

The shooting occurred just after 1 a.m. Friday at the Lakeside Garden Apartments and the suspects were apprehended within 10 minutes after fleeing the scene in a black sedan.

Greenport Superintendent David Gamberg sent a message to parents Friday afternoon saying police have informed them the shooting was not school related, did not occur on school grounds and in no way jeopardizes school safety.

“We have received news from the family that the student is stable, alert and responsive,” he wrote. “They expressed their gratitude for our support and respect for their privacy.”

The body of Richard Hart, a Mattituck man who had been missing since Sunday, was found on the shore of Mattituck Inlet Thursday morning, Southold Town police said.

Richard Hart, a resident of Westphalia Road in Mattituck, was reported missing shortly after his wife Catherine Hart returned home from work Sunday around 5 p.m. and found he wasn’t home. Ms. Hart said on Wednesday afternoon that her husband has health issues, but was sharp and had never wandered. She lives in the house with her husband, who’s a retired dentist, and son.

Family members declined comment Thursday.

On Wednesday, Ms. Hart expressed thanks for the help of neighbors over the past several days.

“Everyone has been looking,” she said while standing in the entryway of their home that overlooks Mattituck Creek. “The police and our neighbors have been wonderful.”

Police and members of the Mattituck Fire Department began a search Sunday evening, she said. Her husband’s hat was found in the water near the dock Sunday night.

“Once they found the hat …” she said, her voice trailing off.

Divers searched the water Sunday and Monday, she said. They continued again Wednesday into Thursday.

Update: Suicidal man fatally shot by police, ending standoff in Greenport

Update, 7:30 p.m.: A 63-year-old man was fatally shot by police after a more than four-hour standoff in Greenport Thursday.

Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer of the Suffolk County Police Department said police were negotiating with the man, who they believed was suicidal, for nearly four hours to attempt a peaceful resolution. Negotiators convinced the man to exit the house on Route 48 shortly after 4 p.m., but he came out waving a shotgun.

“The negotiators told the person to come out without any weapons, however he came out with a shotgun in his hand,” he said. “He waved the shotgun at officers in the armored vehicle and officers were forced to fire once at the subject.”

Police identified the man as Robert Myers of Greenport. Police said the shooting took place at 65275 Middle Road in Greenport, which is the address of the North Fork Audubon.

Mr. Myers was transported via a police medevac to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Lt. Beyrer said. An emergency service officer fired the shot, striking Mr. Myers in the chest, police said.

The situation began shortly before noon when Southold police received a 911 call. A friend who was checking in on the man noticed he was looking out the second-floor window with a rifle. The friend had reason to believe, through another mutual friend, that the man was suicidal. The friend retreated to his vehicle to alert police.

Southold police responded and determined Mr. Myers had barricaded himself in the apartment. Officers quickly set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact with the man while requesting the assistance of negotiators.

“There was a negotiation going on for hours,” Lt. Beyrer said. “At that time, Suffolk police emergency services responded with armored vehicles.”

During negotiations, the man fired several rounds both inside the house and at officers on the perimeter and at the armored vehicle. As many as 10 shots were fired, most of those being inside the house, Lt. Beyrer said. Police did not return fire at that time.

Lt. Beyrer said the man made statements that the house may have been booby-trapped, which required extra time for police to clear the home. It turned out not to be true, he said.

“We are still processing the scene,” he said. “The subject made some statements that he wanted to commit suicide by having police shoot him. There might have been some illness that we’re working on verifying.”

Update, 5:15 p.m.: Southold Det. Sgt. John Sinning told reporters at the scene just after 5 p.m. that the case was going to be handled by Suffolk County police and he could not comment further. Police were planning on condensing the area blocked off to allow media closer access to the scene.

The scene remains active.

Original post: Southold Town police have closed off Route 48 in Greenport between Chapel Lane and Moores Lane while responding to a report of a man possibly barricaded in a residence with weapons.

Police responded to an area east of the Eastern Long Island Kampground around noon Thursday.

It’s unclear what started the situation or if any injuries have been reported. Police at the scene where the road is blocked did not have any information. At one point, police requested a negotiator to the scene, according to scanner reports. A dispatcher relayed to officers a report that the man had three weapons.

The scene remained active as of 5 p.m. At least two gunshots were audible to a reporter at Chapel Lane earlier in the afternoon.

A New York State Police van was seen driving on Route 48 toward the scene shortly before 1:30 p.m. A state police spokesman confirmed they were assisting Southold, but said any further information would come from Southold police.

Suffolk County police emergency service also were seen responding to the scene just past 2 p.m. An armored vehicle approached the scene just past 2:15 p.m.

Additional police units with lights on were arriving at the scene at 2:45 p.m.

A Suffolk police helicopter landed at the Polo Grounds on Moores Lane shortly after 3:30 p.m. as a precaution, officials at the scene said.

In a voicemail sent to Greenport parents, Superintendent David Gamberg said Southold police notified school officials of the situation and said business can continue as usual in the district. Mr. Gamberg said the district coordinated with Sunrise Bus Company “so that students are able to arrive home safely.”

DA: Greenport man charged with manslaughter for causing fatal overdose

Two men were indicted for manslaughter Monday for allegedly supplying heroin cut with fentanyl to a Riverhead man who fatally overdosed in September 2018, according to Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini.

A third man also was indicted on charges including conspiracy, criminal possession of drugs and criminal sale of drugs. The indictment was handed by a Grand Jury on Feb. 22 and the suspects were arraigned Monday.

John Brophy, 49, of Riverhead and LaShawn Lawrence, 35, of Greenport, were both charged with second-degree manslaughter among other charges. The case is only the third time in Suffolk County history that manslaughter charges were brought against drug dealers in connection with a fatal overdose, Mr. Sini said.

On Sept. 19, 2018, the Riverhead Town Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal overdose on Sweezey Avenue in Riverhead. A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim, Lawrence Yaccarino, 50, overdosed on heroin or a mixture of heroin and other substances.

Mr. Yaccarino bought heroin from Mr. Brophy that was laced with fentanyl, officials said. Mr. Lawrence served as Mr. Brophy’s drug supplier, the DA said. Mr. Lawrence was arrested at his Greenport home Feb. 6, officials said.

Mr. Brophy was indicted on 10 counts, including on charges of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of drugs.

Mr. Sini said at a press conference that when he took office, “We made it clear that we were going to have a two-pronged approach” to drug crimes. For a non-violent offender with a drug problem, “we are going to use all the tools we have to get you in treatment,” he said.

“If you are a drug dealer pedaling poison in our communities and you are killing our residents, we are going to aggressively target you through a variety of investigative methods and, where appropriate, charge you with manslaughter to hold you accountable for the death that you cause,” Mr. Sini added.

The third man indicted, Brian Hale, 52, of Flanders allowed Mr. Brophy to sell drugs out of his auto repair shop on 500 Lincoln Ave. in Riverhead, the DA said. He was indicted on charges including fourth-degree conspiracy, first-degree criminal nuisance, third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

After the September overdose, the East End Drug Task Force began an investigation to determine who had supplied the victim with drugs. The Task Force, working with the East End police agencies and the DA’s Narcotics bureau, gained information from the cell phones of the suspects.

In one case, Mr. Brophy told Mr. Lawrence by text that “people r dropping I think it’s [fentanyl] we need to talk I don’t want anything to do with that.”

Mr. Lawrence responded, “My people ain’t playing like that.”

Mr. Brophy then wrote: “I just Narcaned a guy twice in my house and I have another guy” that had problems with the drugs.

“After this, these criminals continued to sell this poison in our community,” Mr. Sini said, adding that several of the supplies of heroin mixed with fentanyl the two men sold led to overdoses in which the user was revived by Narcan. The mixture was packaged in either purple or red waxed envelopes. One overdose allegedly tied to Mr. Brophy occurred Sept. 14, 2018 when a victim crashed his car into another vehicle on Main Street in Greenport and had to be revived by responding officers from the Southold Police Department.

On Monday, Suffolk County Court Judge Anthony Senft Jr. set bail for Mr. Brophy at $125,000 cash or $250,000 bond. Bail was set for Mr. Lawrence at $200,000 cash or $400,000 bond. Bail was set for Mr. Hale at $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.

Colin Astarita, the attorney for Mr. Brophy, said his client is himself a drug user who did drugs with Mr. Yaccarino.

“There’s no evidence to support, other than some text messages,” that his client was involved in the sale of drugs to Mr. Yaccarino, the attorney said.

Mr. Hale’s attorney, Walter Zornes, said his client denies selling drugs. All three suspects entered pleas of not guilty.

On Oct. 5, 2018, the East End Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the Riverhead shop and on Mr. Brophy’s vehicle. Mr. Brophy was found in possession of a quantity of the heroin-fentanyl mixture and Mr. Hale was found in possession of Oxycodone, officials said.

If convicted of the top count, Mr. Brophy and Mr. Lawrence face a maximum sentence of seven and one-half to 15 years in prison. Mr. Hale faces a maximum sentence of up to nine years in prison.

“Currently in New York State, we do not have specific legislation that establishes responsibility for drug dealers when they cause death, so prosecutors and investigators have to be creative,” Mr. Sini said. “While we will continue to be creative, we need better legislation, including a ‘death by dealer’ statute that holds drug dealers accountable when they kill people by selling.”

All three suspects are due back in court March 29.

A 50-year-old Shoreham man died Sunday night after a motorcycle crash in Greenport, according to Southold Town police.

Jon Meeker was driving a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle eastbound on Route 25 just after 8 p.m. and attempted to pass a 2015 Jeep Cherokee on the right as it made a right onto Bailey Avenue, police said. Mr. Meeker was thrown from his motorcycle and collided with a utility pole, police said.

Mr. Meeker was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by members of the Greenport Fire Department where he died, police said.

The driver of the Cherokee, Jennifer Feldstein, 40, of New York was not injured. Two passengers were in the Cherokee and were also not injured. Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said.

Southold police chief Martin Flatley said Monday afternoon that the detective investigating was still interviewing witnesses, including two other motorcyclists he was riding with. It’s unclear whether the driver may have signaled, indicating a left-hand turn, before turning right, he added.

A GoFundMe page was set up Monday afternoon for contributions toward Mr. Meeker’s family. Mr. Meeker is survived by his wife Kimberly, daughter Makayla, a senior at St. Joseph’s College, son Jake, a freshman at Pace University and daughter Ella, who’s in eighth grade at Shoreham-Wading River Middle School.

A wake is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexander Rothwell Funeral Home in Wading River.

The fatal crash comes just over two weeks after a Shoreham-Wading River High School senior died in a crash on Route 25A in Shoreham. Melissa Marchese was 18.

A second crash at nearly the same location occurred a week later when a motorcyclist was struck by a Dodge Challenger pulling out of a shopping center in Shoreham on Route 25A. The motorcyclist in that crash was airlifted with injuries that were not life threatening, according to Suffolk County police.
