Four people were rescued from a capsized boat outside of Mattituck Inlet Sunday morning, according to Southold Town police. No injuries were reported.

A Good Samaritan reported the capsized vessel off the breakwater around 10 a.m., police said. The other people in the boat were a 57-year-old Bay Shore man, a 70-year-old Brooklyn man and a 62-year-old Brentwood man.

A Greenport man safely swam to shore after a wave rocked his 17-foot boat, tossing him into the water and leaving the boat circling unmanned in Southold Bay near Crescent Beach, according to Southold Town police.

Police received a call from a Greenport resident reporting a man screaming for help shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday. The caller was unsure if the man was in the water or on land. Responding officers were able to hear a man yelling for help somewhere west of Conkling Point in Greenport. They could also hear what they believed to be a boat going in circles in the vicinity of Camp Quinipet on Shelter Island and requested assistance from Shelter Island Police.

Shelter Island officers confirmed the noise was a runaway vessel with no driver.

Marine units from Southold and Shelter Island police and Southold and Shelter Island fire departments were dispatched to search for the missing boater. The U.S. Coast Guard also dispatched a cutter from Mattituck and helicopter.

At about 2:15 a.m., the driver of the boat, Matthew Kapell, 38, safely swam to shore at Bay Home Road in Southold and was able to contact his family, police said. Mr. Kapell was found in good condition with no injuries.

Mr. Kapell told police he pulled up his anchor and was heading to the beach at Crescent Beach to pick up his relatives when a wave rocked the boat, pitching him into the water.

The boat was eventually disabled by a Southold Marine unit with the assistance of Sea Tow, police said. Sea Tow managed to tow the vessel, a Key West center console, to its Southold facility, police said.

Mr. Kapell was reunited with his family members with the help of the Southold marine unit.

Four boats destroyed during overnight fire at Mattituck marina

Southold Town Police are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out during overnight hours at Strong’s Water Club and Marina in Mattituck, Police Chief Martin Flatley said.

A Mattituck resident called police at approximately 2:49 a.m. Tuesday and reported the smell of plastic burning, police said.

Police responded and were able to locate the fire outside on the south side of a storage building, police said. Four customer-owned boats stationed on land were fully engulfed in flames when police arrived.

Owner Jeff Strong said the fire ignited in one boat and spread to three adjacent boats.

Members of the Mattituck Fire Department responded to the scene at 2:55 a.m. and were able to contain the fire to the four vessels, said Chief Ted Webb.

The fire department extinguished the fire by 6 a.m. No injuries were reported.

General manager Timothy Norton said he arrived at the scene slightly after 3 a.m. to assess the situation. The fire was still “smoldering” at that time, he said.

“A boat is basically made of petroleum,” Mr. Norton said. “So everything that went up earlier, it ignited and it melted down to nothing. Basically what happens is you can have different components inside there that continue to ember and flash back up.”

Mr. Norton said one of larger sailboats that went up in flames had been dormant for several years. The other boats, he said, have not been used in about a year.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Suffolk County Arson Squad and Southold Town Detective Division, police said.

Mr. Strong said the cause of the fire is “suspicious” as it doesn’t appear the fire self-ignited.

“This was an isolated area where we keep boats in the summertime,” he said. “It’s not like these boats were in for service, the customers just chose them not to put their boats in the water this year.”

No buildings or docks were damaged as a result of the fire, police said.

The area is accessible to the public, Mr. Strong said, but customers would need approval and assistance from marina staff before moving or using a vessel, he said.

Video: Southold Police Kids’ FunFest draws big crowd to Mitchell Park

Lia Cappiello, 9, climbed onto a stationary Southold police motorcycle as a police officer supervised. She pushed a button and sounded a siren that echoed through Mitchell Park in Greenport Wednesday.

“They showed us how to make it go very fast,” one of her brothers, Alessandro, 6, said.

Lia, Alessandro, and brother Christian, 2, were three of at least 150 children that attended Southold Police Kids’ FunFest, a free two-hour event in the park.

Children learned about police equipment, climbed into the Mobile Command Center, explored a patrol car, tried on police gear and even got fingerprinted with help from police detectives, highway and marine patrol officers, motorcycle and bicycle officers.

Created by Southold Town police in conjunction with nonprofit Paul Drum Life Experience Project and Greenport Village Summer Day Camp, the occasion was the second of its kind.

The organization, which works to enrich the lives of kids through hands-on experiences, according to its website, hosts an eight-week summer program free to children 7–12. The nonprofit was eager to expand the event to a wider audience this year, president of the organization Sharon Sailor said.

“Why only expose 20 kids who signed up for the class when we could expose the whole community?” she asked. “We wanted the community and the police force to come together, we want kids to know that they can … have an officer to talk to and there’s not anything to be afraid of.”

The interactive police session worked to expose kids to the benefits of local law enforcement, Arlene Klein, Creative Director of the Paul Drum Life Experience Project said.

Officers and children pose for a photo. (Credit: Kate Nalepinski)

“The officers have been so kind and generous with the kids,” she said. “It’s so the children can become familiar with the police and they understand that police are special, and they’re here to protect all of us.”

The event culminated with a demonstration from the Southold, Riverhead and Southampton K-9 corps.

Ruth Urwand of Cutchogue said the attention of the two children she was watching, Renny and Gabi Opisso, stayed on the canines during the presentation. She was excited to bring the girls to the waterfront location after she discovered the event on Facebook.

“Between our libraries and parks and beaches, we do something different every day,” she said. “I think they should see the police equipment and make that connection.”

Roughly six months of planning went into the event, police Chief Martin Flatley said.

“The kids and their counselors took advantage of everything we had to offer down here,” he said. “I think it was a success, and we’re aiming to do it again next year.”

Earlier this summer, the Paul Drum Life Experience Project hosted sign language and robot education sessions for their enrolled students.

A 57-year-old man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital Tuesday afternoon after his legs were injured in a boating incident, according to Southold Town police.

Police Chief Martin Flatley said the Southampton Police Department received a call around 2:23 p.m. that a man fell in Peconic Bay. The call was relayed to Southold police and both departments began a search in the bay.

A Southold Bay Constable found the injured man aboard a vessel near James Creek in Mattituck. Three additional passengers were on board, police said. Mattituck Fire Department officials said boat propellers had scrapped the lower half of his legs and caused severe lacerations.

Police said in a press release the man entered the water to take a turn on a tube and failed to realize that the boat had been left in forward gear.

The bay constable took control of that boat and navigated back to Strong’s Marine in Mattituck where an ambulance was waiting. The ambulance transported him to Mattituck High School where he was airlifted for injuries that were not life-threatening.

“His lacerations were deep, but it did not look like it hit any arteries,” Chief Flatley said.

Additional information was not immediately available.

A young Greenport girl was killed Tuesday night in a T-bone crash at the intersection of Route 48 and Chapel Lane, Southold Town police said.

Amber Stulsky, 11, was a passenger in the rear seat of her mother’s 2003 Mercury Sable when it was struck while heading eastbound on Route 48 in Greenport shortly before 8:30 p.m., police said. Paul Greenfield, 71, of Port Jefferson was attempting to make a left-hand turn from Chapel Lane in a 2004 Infinity when his vehicle struck the Sable being driven by Amber’s mother, 32-year-old Rachael Smith of Greenport, as it passed the intersection.

Amber was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, where she succumbed to her injuries soon after the crash, police said. A Suffolk police medevac had been en route to Greenport High School, but was canceled as first responders opted to transport her via ambulance to the nearby hospital instead.

Route 48 was closed between Albertson and Moores lanes as first responders continued to work the scene. While the crash is still being investigated, no criminality is suspected, according to police.

The extent of any other injuries were not immediately clear. Mr. Greenfield was driving alone, police said.

Amber would have started fifth grade at Southold Elementary School Wednesday.

Southold Superintendent David Gamberg said the school’s faculty and staff met first thing Wednesday morning and are providing support to students and staff.

“As you can imagine a tragedy like this is never easy to cope with, but is even more pronounced on what is typically a day filled with joy, the first day of school,” he said in an email.

Mr. Gamberg sent a letter to elementary school families. He described Amber as a “lovely little girl.”

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Amber’s family and friends,” he wrote. “Our staff is heartbroken.”

He said in the letter that neighboring school districts have offered their support and anyone who needs to reach out and contact anyone at Southold, whether the elementary school or district office.

The Mattituck School District issued a statement expressing condolences to Amber’s family and the Southold school community.

“On behalf of the MC Board of Education and your friends and staff in our district, we extend our sincerest sympathy, trusting that remembrance by so many friends will bring Amber’s family and the Southold School District comfort,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.”

The Daniel Gale Sotheby office on Love Lane in Mattituck was damaged late Wednesday night by a minor fire in the basement. The cause was determined to be electrical, according to Carol Szynaka, the East End sales manager.

The smell of smoke was still prevalent Thursday morning on Love Lane and the glass on the front windows and door at the office was shattered.

Southold police chief Martin Flatley said the fire was was not suspicious. It occurred around 11:30 p.m.

Ms. Szynaka said she got a call late Wednesday night from a friend who alerted her there was a fire. She jumped out of bed, she said, and headed to the scene from her Southold home.

She said they were fortunate of the timing and that no one was inside and firefighters were able to limit the damage.

“It was so impressive the way those men and women rallied together,” she said.

By the time she got to Mattituck, about 20 to 30 firefighters were already working at the scene, she said.

“It makes you proud to be there,” she said.

She said they’re fortunate to have office space nearby with another Mattituck location on Main Road and offices in Cutchogue and Greenport that can fill the void temporarily until repairs are made. Desks are already set up at the other Mattituck location and she said they’re “quickly going to get things back up and running” on Love Lane.

Daniel Gale Sotheby International Realty is based in Cold Spring Harbor has 26 sales offices.
