Cops: Greenport man charged with raping girl, 12

A 20-year-old Greenport man has been arrested for allegedly  having sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old girl in the village, Southold Town Police said in a press release issued Sunday afternoon.

Erick Ramirez, a former soccer standout at Greenport High School, was arrested Saturday and held overnight for a Sunday morning arraignment on charges of first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Bail was set at $250,000 by Southold Town Justice Bill Price.

Mr. Ramirez has since been transferred to the Suffolk County Jail. The Guatemalan native is also facing detention from the Department of Homeland Security over his immigration status.

Mr. Ramirez was a standout soccer player for the Porters in 2011 and 2012, earning all-league honors.

Car skids off roadway near Broadwaters Creek

A 24-year-old Westhampton woman escaped uninjured Sunday morning after her car skid on an icy patch, turned over and became partially submerged in Broadwaters Creek at Nassau Point, Southold Town Police said in a press release.

The woman was able to exit her 2009 Honda safely and walk to a neighbor’s house for help, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m., police said.

A 27-year-old gas station employee was arrested Saturday for stealing more than $2,000 from the Mattituck station where he was employed, Southold Town Police said.

Orcan Unsal of Mattituck was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, police said.

He was processed and released on bail, police said.

Cops: Man crashes Cadillac on North Ferry boat

An 85-year-old New York City man caused a scene at the North Ferry terminal in Greenport Saturday when he accidentally stepped on the gas instead of the brake after boarding the Manhansett, Southold Town Police said.

The man’s 2006 Cadillac struck the forward metal gunwale of the boat, turning it sideways and forcing the rear bumper to strike another vehicle already parked on the ferry shortly before 6 p.m., police said.

The Cadillac sustained major damage and had to be towed off the ferry boat and both the driver and passenger were taken by Greenport Rescue to ELIH for treatment of injuries, police said..

The ferry boat also sustained damage and had to be taken out of commission until repairs could be made, police said.

Cops: Attempted break-in at Front Street business

Southold police are searching for a person who attempted to break into a retail store in Greenport last Wednesday night, according to a town police report.

Officers responded to the Front Street business around midnight after receiving a report of an activated alarm, the report stated.

Upon arrival, police said, officers discovered that the front door knob had been drilled out and there were pry marks on the door frame.

The store’s manager confirmed that the damage was new since the last time she had been there, according to the report. Nothing was taken from the business, police said.

A Greenport woman filed a complaint with police after discovering three sets of deer organs that had been dumped in a wooded area near her home on Kerwin Boulevard, according to a police report.

The 37-year-old woman called in the report last Friday, police said, saying she did not see anyone dump the remains there but wanted to document the incident.

If captured, the person responsible would face illegal dumping charges, the report stated.

A Mattituck man was arrested for driving drunk in Cutchogue early Sunday morning, Southold Town police said.

Andrew Faircloth, 24, was stopped on Route 25 near Alvahs Lane for failing to maintain his lane and speeding around 2:30 a.m., according to a police report.

Mr. Faircloth was found to be intoxicated and transported to Southold Town Police headquarters awaiting morning arraignment, police said.

Mr. Faircloth was previously arrested by Southold Police in November 2012 for robbing a man at knifepoint at tavern, Broken Down Valise in Mattituck, police records show.

A Greenport man who was driving with a fake license, was arrested early Sunday on an outstanding warrant in connect with a prior arrest, Southold Town Police said.

Roberto Garrido, 27, was taken into custody around 12:30 a.m. after police found him sitting in his vehicle outside his Fifth Street residence with a fraudulent Guatemalan driver’s license, according to a police report.

Mr. Garrido also had a warrant out for his arrest after being charged for driving drunk in Cutchogue in September, police said.

Mr. Garrido was transported to headquarters and held for arraignment, according to the report. In addition to the warrant, he’s charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument 3rd/ Warrant


Cops: Thief runs up $1,300 on Greenport woman’s credit card

Someone used a Greenport woman’s credit card number to spend more than $1,300 in Florida, according to a police report. 

The victim told police the identity thief made 17 purchases in “various places throughout Florida.”

The victim’s bank said it would compensate her for the $1,305.87 stolen, but needed her to file a police report.

A copy of the bank statement was forwarded to detectives for further investigation.

Cops: Greenport man caught driving with revoked license

A Greenport man allegedly driving with a revoked license was arrested in Greenport Village last week, Southold Town police said. 

Branden Sutherland, 28, was stopped on Fifth Street about 9 p.m. Friday after he failed to stop at a stop sign, according to a police report. A check of his DMV records showed that Mr. Sutherland’s license had been revoked, police said. He was arrested at the scene.

Mr. Sutherland was charged with aggravated unlicensed driving, a misdemeanor. He was released on $100 bail and is due back in court later this month.

Man accused of raping preteen faces 10 felony charges

A 20-year-old Greenport man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl allegedly had sex with the girl on several separate dates, including three times on Jan. 20, six days before he was arrested by Southold Town police, prosecutors said.

Erick Ramirez was arraigned in county court Thursday morning on 10 counts of felony rape and five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor.

According to his indictment by a grand jury, Mr. Ramirez “engaged in sexual intercourse” with the victim on or about Nov. 28 to Dec. 25, on Dec. 13 and three times on Jan. 20. He faces two counts of rape — a first and second degree charge — for each alleged incident.

RAMIREZ_BLMr. Ramirez pleaded not guilty to the charges, a court clerk said. He is being held on $100,000 cash or $250,000 bond bail, what prosecutors had requested of Judge James Hudson.

Mr. Ramirez’s attorney, Riverhead-based Luis Pagan, could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

The Greenport man, a former soccer standout at Greenport High School in 2011 and 2012 who earned all-league honors, is also in the custody of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officials due to questions concerning his immigration status, authorities said.

He is due back in court on Mar. 13, a court clerk said.

Cops: Man caught driving with 29 license suspensions

A Peconic man who has had his drivers license suspended nearly 30 times was arrested after he was caught driving near his home Monday, Southold Town police said.

Police pulled over Chester Ozarowski, 58, about 3:20 p.m. on Main Road in Peconic and found he was driving with a suspended license, according to a police statement. Officers learned that Mr. Ozarowski’s license had been suspended 29 prior times on 12 separate dates, and that his registration was also suspended, according to the statement.

He was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated unlicensed driving and operating with a suspended registration, both misdemeanors. Mr. Ozarowski was taken to police headquarters and later released on bail, police said.

SUV flips on icy Mattituck road, no serious injuries

An SUV hit a snowy patch of road in Mattituck and crashed off the road, flipping onto its roof Tuesday evening, fire officials said.

The driver and female passenger of the car both escaped without serious injury.

The vehicle was westbound on Sound Avenue when it skidded and rolled off the road about 5 p.m. across the street from Macari Vineyard, fire officials said. Southold police and Mattituck firefighters and rescue teams were called to the scene, and found that the driver was unhurt.

The woman did not complain of any injuries, but was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for observation, said assistant fire chief James Rugnetta.

Sound Avenue was closed between Bergen Avenue and Cox Neck Road as the crashed SUV was towed from the scene and town crews plowed and salted the road.

Cops: Car crash leads to drunk driving arrest

A 21-year-old Peconic man was charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his vehicle in Mattituck Tuesday morning, Southold police said. 

Ryan Mazzei was involved in the accident about 7:30 a.m. on Sound Avenue, according to a police report. He was found to be intoxicated at the scene, arrested and charged with misdemeanor DWI.

Mr. Mazzei was taken to police headquarters and held for arraignment, police said.

Police: Fugitive out of Florida nabbed stealing cigarettes in Greenport

After Southold Town police arrested a Greenport man for stealing cigarettes Monday, police learned Brevard County in Florida had two outstanding felony warrants for the suspect’s arrest, according to a police press release.

Craig Waters, 21, was charged with petit larceny for stealing two packs of cigarettes from an unidentified business in Greenport, police said.

After Mr. Waters made bail, Southold Town police turned him over to the Suffolk County Police Fugitive Squad for extradition to Florida on theft related incidents, officials said.

No other details about the incident were immediately available.

A 59-year-old Riverhead man was arrested on drunken-driving charges in Mattituck Sunday night, Southold Town police said.

Mark Johnson was stopped about 6:30 p.m. for failing to signal a left turn onto Love Lane from Pike Street, according to a police report.

Upon further investigation, Mr. Johnson was found to be intoxicated, police said.

He was transported to Southold police headquarters.

Cops: Bellport man was speeding with 100+ license suspensions

A 44-year-old man with more than 100 active drivers license suspensions was caught speeding with switched license plates in Cutchogue Friday, Southold Town police said.

Jerry Tenzie of Bellport was pulled over on Route 48 about 9:15 a.m. by the Southold police highway patrol, police said. A computer search of Mr. Tenzie’s record showed that he had 105 suspensions for various offenses “including failure to appear in court and failure to pay fines,” according to a police statement.

Another computer search found that Mr. Tenzie’s vehicle was unregistered, uninsured, hadn’t been inspected and had switched license plates, police said.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed driving and traffic violations. He was arraigned in Southold Town court and held in Suffolk County jail on $2,500 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

A 36-year-old Greenport man was arrested for driving while intoxicated with a suspended license on Third Street early Thursday morning, Southold Town police said.

The man had previously pleaded guilty to felony assault after carrying a street fight into a hospital emergency room last year and was free pending his sentencing.
Hraklis Morris was stopped at 2:25 a.m. for a violation when officers noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, according to a police report.

Mr. Morris failed several roadside sobriety tests, police said. He was charged with misdemeanor aggravated DWI and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to the report.

He was transported to police headquarters where he was held for arraignment, police said.

A DMV check revealed Mr. Morris’ driving privileges are currently suspended, police said.

In November, Mr. Morris attacked a 24-year-old man with a knife in the Adams Street parking lot near the laundromat in Greenport. Both Mr. Morris and the victim were injured in the fight and were taken to Eastern Long Island hospital by friends, police said.

Mr. Morris then continued the fight in the emergency room about half an hour after at 12:30 a.m., attacking another man. While breaking up the fight, members of the hospital staff sustained minor injuries, police said.

Mr. Morris was charged with three counts of felony assault and pleaded guilty to all charges on Dec. 10. He was released on his own recognizance before sentencing, court records show.

A 46-year-old Mattituck man was arrested for driving drunk Friday night, according to Southold Town Police. 

Margarito Gonzalez was stopped for a traffic violation on New Suffolk Avenue around 9 p.m. when officers found him to be intoxicated, police said.

He was arrested and charged with DWI and possessing an open container of alcohol, a police report stated.

Mr. Gonzalez was transported to Southold Town Police headquarters and held for arraignment, the report said.

A Riverhead man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted another man at a bus stop in Greenport on Wednesday, Southold Town police said.

Patrick Sims, 59, was waiting at the Front Street bus stop at around 6:25 a.m. when he hit the victim in the face twice “causing red marks,” police said.

Mr. Sims then fled the scene, but was later caught by police, officials said.

He was held awaiting arraignment on undisclosed charges, according to the police’s press release issued Thursday night.
